Dr. Carolyn Howell was born and raised in Washington, DC. Growing up, she has always had a heart for children, even as a child herself. Additionally, she dreamed of being a healer. After graduating from Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, she attended Spelman College in Atlanta, GA. While at Spelman she maintained a Pre-Medical track, and ultimately graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. Her undergraduate experience solidified her desire to become a physician, and specifically a pediatric specialist. The next step in her journey was to gain admission to medical school. She ultimately matriculated at Howard University College of Medicine, where she graduated in the top ten percent of women in her class. During her last two years of medical school she decided to pursue Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She completed her Adult Psychiatry Residency at George Washington University in Washington, DC. She then completed the Child Psychiatry Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, where she served as Chief Resident. While training at Johns Hopkins she recognized her calling to treat more severely mentally ill children. She then developed a specialty niche in treating Early and Recent Onset Schizophrenia. Dr. Howell has tenured three Medical Directorships in her career. Currently she works as the lead Child Psychiatrist in the Early Psychosis Intervention Clinic RAISE Team. She also serves as Medical Director of Outpatient Mental Health Services for The Children’s Guild. Additionally, she runs her own private practice in Howard County, where she sees children and adults for psychotherapy and medication management. In addition to managing her bustling practices, she is a wife and mother of three.
